WHO'S THAT LION?
It has been more than 35 years that this beast has breathed, sweated and boogied jazz! But not only that: song, dance, poetry, performance, rock, the street... To please you!
The Collectif du Lion lives as a company of artists (some have been here ‘since the beginning!). They come from different disciplines and come together during creations, multidisciplinary projects, musical groups… around a shared aesthetic.
“(...)I have come to know a bit better, the strange inhabitants of this imaginary planet. They are musicians who have a sense of generosity, the taste for research and innovation, but also and especially of sharing. It is without doubt for this reason that they have adopted other voyagers in innovative music and broad ideas (...) For thirty years now, the Collectif from Liege has created a particular place in contemporary jazz, or rather in contemporary music as, that is its strength: It goes beyond the borders, it breaks the codes, it invents new ones, while respecting the hosts ... and others.
There are definitely few contemporaries, who are as powerful to mark, without destroying anything, the musical landscape, often too conservative. Fortunately, jazz is without doubt, one of the disciplines the most open to all adventures. And, fortunately for us, within jazz, musicians like those of the Lion do not cease opening again and again, spaces in order to go further than the music itself.” Extract from the preface to “Sur la piste du Collectif du Lion…”

“The creative framework of the Collectif du Lion has been nourished, as of the start of traditions, by influences and diverse practices (jazz, contemporary music, theatre, song, literature...). All this we have “filtered” to extract our essence, our living memory, like an artisan, doing and re-doing to discover our proper identity, a recognisable personal conversation blending rigour and poetry, joy and nostalgia, emotion and legibility.
Right from first musical groups at the origin of the Collectif du Lion, the desire has always been the same: that of a real group, a sound, a profound song (le denude), above and beyond genres. The desire for chivalrous paths, real emotions which drive primitive music without care for modernity. The search for prime vibrations, of the organic melody, rhythm, the movement of the body singing, of the body moving, of the alerted listener, the intelligent lover of pleasure. The same aspirations today, come through everything you will find on this site; in the music, the teaching, the collaborations, the interdisciplinary projects ... Do and re-do like an artisan!”
Once upon a time there was a meeting of musicians coming from a time blessed with all the gods... A great visionary and Director of the Royal Conservatory of Liege, Henri Pousseur, opened the doors of the Temple to musicians and teachers, whether with diplomas or not, from all horizons.
The opening of the Jazz Seminars and the Improvisation Classes, almost like laboratories, would very quickly need playing fields. The “Lion S’Envoile” [The Lion Takes Off] (jazz club re-invented by the Cirque Divers) would become one of prime importance; it would be the inspiration for the name of the first groups: the Orchestre du Lion and the Collectif du Lion. This musical effervescence gave birth to many other groups and soon asked the question of the necessity of a structure “able to manage the life of the artist”...
The association, established in ‘89 would be baptised Collectif du Lion, faithful to this jazz club, a special place for experimentation and diffusion.

une aventure plus que musicale
35TH ANNIVERSARY BOOK
In 2014, Claude Fafchamps (Arsenic2) and Yanic Samzun (Présences et Actions Culturelles) invited us to produce the fifth volume of the collection «Les Voies de la Création Culturelle» – PAC Press.
The goal of this collection is to recount the experiences lived, to make them more visible and legible, to make a place to provide a status and to appreciate the inventive actions which leave the standards of industrial cultural consumption.
This 192 page book with different authors and magnificently illustrated by the Racasse Studio team, “shows us that the sparse paths converge to another way of creating, a means to create together”. This Lion is sparse?
